The Olympics allow the athletes to showcase their abilities whether is something that takes a lot of physical effort like cross country skiing, or something that takes more mental strategy, like curling. The Olympics have been successful because the Ancient Olympics started them, and because hockey has changed American sports history ever. First, the ancient Olympics basically started competitions for athletes. For example, the Olympics were created to worship the Greek god Zeus. Zeus was the most important god to them. Also, only men free born Greek men were allowed to participate in the Ancient Olympics. The men had to do all the competitions in complete nudity (perseus.tufts.edu). Additionally, the winner of the competition received an olive branch. The olive branch was sacred to the Greek religion and it was an honor to receive it (Olympic.org). The ancient Olympics lead to more modern Olympics which then lead to the winter Olympics. Second, hockey is a winter sport that a lot of people like to play and watch. To illustrate, the United States hockey team defeated the USSR (The Soviet Union). The Soviets dominated most of the 1970’s and were expected to win in 1980 winter Olympics, but the United States shocked the world and won the gold medal (edgate.com). Furthermore, the team practices in Chula Vista, California. 4000 athletes have the honor to train in the magnificent facility (sandiegocoastlife.com). Finally, although everybody know about the miracle on ice, Canada has actually won the most gold medals with a total of eight. The Soviets were a close second with 7, but the Soviets did not enter at team until 1956 (proicehockey.about.com). Hockey is one of many great winter Olympics sports. In conclusion, the Olympics are important to the world because the ancient Olympics lead to many different events, and because hockey changes people’s feeling about American sports. The Olympics force the whole world to come together whether in war or not and celebrate their counties athletes and enjoy peace for a month. A goal for most Americans is to compete in the Olympics.
